Receiving large messages may take a considerable amount of time (several minutes) over a slow (modem) connection. Your eMail application is likely not patient enough to wait for the transfer to complete.
During the transfer, IzyMail is not really 'stuck', but just communicating with the external servers. It will recover when the transfer completes.
To make your application less sensitive against slow transfers, return to the account configuration screens of your application and look out for 'Server Timeout' options. Increasing the timeout value to 5 min (300 sec) will not do any harm.
In Outlook, the server timeout option can be found via the menu
Tools - Accounts - {your account} - [Properties] - Advanced
When a large message fails to send, it may very well be that this message would exceed your disk allowance on the server.
