How can I get IzyMail to work with Norton Antivirus?

Older versions of Norton Antivirus email protection notoriously intercept the communication between your eMail application and IzyMail and issue 'logon denied' messages.

To test whether this is the case on your computer, you can temporarily disable Norton's email protection. If everything works now, please consider these options to fix the problem permanently:

  • Use IzyMail and the IMAP connection method. Norton does not know about IMAP and does not intercept that path.
  • Upgrade to the 2002 version of Norton Antivirus.

If you are an expert and don't want to upgrade, you can try these tricks, which were submitted by other users:

  • I have only tried this with MS Outlook 2000 and Norton AV 2001 but can't see any reason why it shouldn't work with other apps.

    My setup is as follows:
Pop3Hot is set to receive on port 1100

My Outlook account is setup as follows:
      POP server: localhost
      Email address:
      POP port: 1100

When I activate email scanning in NAV the server settings are changed to:
      POP server: pop3.norton.antivirus
      Email address: /localhost
      POP port: 1100

At this point Pop3Hot ceases to get emails, but if you change the setup to:
      POP server: pop3.norton.antivirus
      Email address: /localhost:1100
POP port: 110 (NB Back to default port)
Pop3Hot gets the email on port 1100 and then passes it to NAV for scanning.

    Neat eh !!!

Symantec explains how you can switch the port that NAV binds to.
This is a much better solution than the shutting down of NAV Email Protection that is suggested in your FAQ.
Moreover, it means that I can have NAV scan incoming email from Hotmail as well as my many other POP accounts.
In Eudora, you can switch the port the email program uses for POP (and other email related protocols) simply by moving esoteric.epi file from the extrastuff folder to the main Eudora folder. Then, going to Tools->Options->Ports.
